23.5.12

WEEK 13

DUE BY MONDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Update series blogs with seven final images.

Then upload the FINAL DRAFT of your book to our BLURB account. Jenny will place the order for the books on Friday!

Please remember that you are limited to a $40 book, so be careful! If your book is going to cost more than that, then you must purchase it yourself and bring the receipt to Jenny to be reimbursed the $40 that you are allowed. I will have the books in my office during the first week of school.

*****Please note that we are planning an Art Exhibition where we display your books and some of the images  from your series blogs on the first Thursday 8/30/12 evening of next semester. (Keep that evening free!) I have done one every year that I have taught this class, and it always turns out exceptionally well. If you would like to print a few images from your blogs for our Exhibition, email them to me.We can decide what size is best to print them. Then we can email them to our lab tech, tell her what size to print them, and we can hang them on that Thursday. If you have trouble choosing images, I will be happy to suggest some for you. ( You do not have to participate if you do not want to, just please let me know.)

This class has been one of the best! You all are a talented and professional group of artists. I hope to have you again in one of my classes in the future.

WEEK 12

DUE BY MONDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Update series blogs with seven new images, as usual.

Upload the final pages of your books. Please upload them as screen shots so that we may see the spread as you have designed it. Then upload the book to our BLURB account so that we might thumb through the almost final draft.

DUE TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Please offer your peers any suggestions to strengthen and finalize BOTH the Books AND the Series Blogs!

This is essentially your last chance to provide and receive feedback before I grade you for your Final. Your critiques should be supportive, yet honest. Remember to point out images that DO NOT SUPPORT the ideas of the blogs or books.Remember to point out images in need of color correction or cropping.

PLEASE NOTE: You will be graded on the quality of these critiques.

Spend next week finalizing your book and blog. If someone has suggested that you remove/replace one or more images, think hard about their advice. Remember that "off color" images will not be considered "A" worthy. At this point, all of your images should have beautifully rich tones, excellent composition and poignant subject matter. If one image is weak, make sure you replace it with a stronger one.

WEEK 11

DUE BY MONDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Update series blogs with seven new images, as usual.

Please address your books based upon your peers critiques. Then, upload any adjustments that you have made to your first 10 pages. Please upload them as screen shots so that we may see the spread as you have designed it. Use this week to shoot final images to complete your book.

DUE TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT
You are free! I will offer suggestions for any final adjustments that might make the work stronger if it is needed.

WEEK 10

DUE BY MONDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Update series blogs with seven new images, as usual.
Plan the layout of your book project. Please upload your first 10 pages +  front and back cover.  Please upload them as screen shots so that we may see the spread as you have designed it.

Pay special attention to the flow of the book. When you open a pictorial book, the left and right page, together, generally create a new composition. Please be aware of that as you create the layout. Be careful of tonal inconsistencies. For instance, if you color corrected the image on page one, and not the image on page two--you will see a color shift that will create a disconnect for the viewer. Essentially, take your time and be cognizant of creating a beautiful book with interesting compositions,  beautiful colors, and a flow that is appropriate for the pace that your viewers will peruse it. Also--if you have decided that a different format is needed for your book--now is the time to change your mind. This is the week to experiment. If you would like to post a few versions of pages 7&8--go ahead! We will help you decide what works best for your idea.

If you need to address your front and back covers again, I will let you know. If you have not heard from me, then we all agree that you have nailed them and we can put them to rest.

PS. THERE ARE NO RULE THAT DICTATE THAT YOUR BOOK MUST BE READ LEFT TO RIGHT OR RIGHT SIDE UP. It is an art class. If it suits your idea, try something experimental.

DUE TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Look closely and critically at the work of your peers. Address each page that has been uploaded. There should be at least a sentence for each page. Offer suggestions to strengthen the layout, and if you truly believe that it is perfect the way that it is--great! Say so! Sometimes we do get it right the first time.

WEEK 9

DUE BY MONDAY @ MIDNIGHT
This is an easy week!
Update both blogs with seven new images each.
Use this time to begin planning the layout of your book project. Next week you will be asked to upload your first 10 pages and front and back cover. Use this time to prepare!

DUE TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT

WEEK 7

DUE BY MONDAY @ MIDNIGHT
PLEASE REMOVE THE CAPCHA ON YOUR BLOGS. IT REALLY SLOWS US DOWN.
Update your "Series" blogs. You received a lot of feedback in your last crit and a few of you still have some images up that could/should be replaced! Focus and address all of the issues mentioned. Make sure that you remove old "ill fitting" images and replace with strong images. THEN post your new 7 images. (You should have 42 in total.) ------------I will be counting this time! :)

Post seven new images for your books. Then create three distinctly different front and back covers for your books. (Use rule of thirds and craft an excellent composition!) Post at the very top of your blogs.

DUE BY TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Give your classmates a solid critique of their book covers. Let them know which ones work the best for their ideas. AND WHY.  Please post these on each artists "Book" Blog.

Also, please give each classmate a paragraph in regards to the book, only for the few that have switched gears and started over since we last took a look. You know the drill now, so address any inconsistencies in regard to form, concept and execution.

I will be leaving by car for San Francisco Tuesday AM. I will most likely get your crits finished by Wednesday evening as usual. If not, I will definitely be done with them on Thursday. Text is best this week!

WEEK 6

DUE TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT:
Choose an artist from the list that your classmates provided (other than your own choice).
Discuss in a well written paragraph (or two) the elements of the that artists' practice or body of work which you find engaging. Also please note who you posted as your fav.

WEEK 5

DUE BY MONDAY@ MIDNIGHT
Address your "Book" blogs. They should have a clear statement of the concept of your book, a physical description of the book (dimension, type of paper, text/no text or describe the intentions for an object based book). Upload 7 working images for your book.

Please update your "Series" blogs via the crit that you received during class. You received a lot of feedback! Focus and address all of the issues mentioned. DUE BY TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT

DUE BY TUESDAY @ MIDNIGHT
Please offer your peers a critique of their "Series" project. Please use the language of your readings.

Please write three short paragraph critiques of each artists  "Series" blog.
The first paragraph should address any lingering formal issues
within the entirety of the blog, including color, font, text, weak statement, and
usability/navigation of the blog.
The second paragraph should address any lingering conceptual issues
that could be strengthened. Offer suggestions to do so. Remember...addressing THE WHY is key!
The third should address the photographs that are NOT supporting the overall
theme/concept of the blog. Tell the artist why! Then point out the photos that do it really well.
